Steven Palanchuck

Balado documentaire, depuis janvier 2025

Steven Palanchuck

Author and creator of the podcast Soigner jusqu’à se briser

I knew how to recognize distress in my patients. I did not recognize my own until it broke me.

I needed help too. In November 2024, I wrote about mine in La Presse. Since then, I have been listening to other people in health care talk about theirs.

The podcast was born of physician suicides close to him. Physicians, nurses, residents, psychologists and family members talk about exhaustion, silence, addiction, complaints, and coming back. Long conversations, half an hour to almost an hour and a half, where there is time. Twenty-two episodes and two specials so far.

Thirty-seven thousand audio downloads and sixty-two thousand views on YouTube since launch, as of September 2026.

Where to start

Talks

By invitation

Steven Palanchuck speaks to health care institutions, medical faculties, conferences, professional associations and resident groups about the distress of those who care for others, the culture of silence in medicine, and coming back after a leave, drawing on what the podcast has taught him and on what he has lived. A talk, a workshop or a conversation with the room, depending on the place and the time; the meeting can also take the form of a podcast episode recorded before a live audience, with a guest, and released afterwards. In French; in English on request.

For speaking inquiries, send the audience, the proposed period and the location to go@stevenpalanchuck.com. The press kit (in French) covers the rest.

The Island

An illustrated tale. Digital edition on November 6, 2026, in English and in French (L’Île).

There is a fire in this book. At first it means: come and find us. Later it means: this is the way back. The podcast was the first fire. This book is the second.

Cover of L’Île: two men by a boat pulled up on the sand, under a sky of clouds

Two men are washed up on an island after a shipwreck. One draws maps, the other cuts wood. They do not know each other. One does not want help, just a little. The other does not know how to help, but wants to be useful. The tale teaches them nothing; it shows them.

They say there is, beyond the known and unknown routes, a treasure. Nobody knows what it looks like. They say it is priceless. That it is irreplaceable. That it cannot be found.

First made for one reader, ten copies numbered by hand, then published for people who care for others, who teach, who help for a living, and for the people who live with them. Two thousand words, twenty minutes read aloud, from age ten with an adult.

Digital edition

The digital edition adds to the tale a set of questions in three levels, with no answers, for the dinner table, the classroom or an evening alone, and the notes on how the book was made. The illustrations were conceived and directed by the author and made with the help of artificial intelligence; the book says so and shows the pictures that were set aside. Translated from the French by the author with AI translation tools and copy-edited by Paul Carlucci.

An eleven-page excerpt, the free classroom guide (in French now, in English in November), how the book was made and where to find it: on the book page.
